RESUMO

Isoflavones are major secondary metabolites that are exclusively produced by legumes, including soybean. Soy isoflavones play important roles in human health as well as in the plant defense system. The isoflavone content is influenced by minor-effect quantitative trait loci, which interact with polygenetic and environmental factors. It has been difficult to clarify the regulation of isoflavone biosynthesis because of its complex heritability and the influence of external factors. Here, using a genotype-by-sequencing-based genome-wide association mapping study, 189 mutant soybean genotypes (the mutant diversity pool, MDP) were genotyped on the basis of 25,646 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with minor allele frequency of >0.01 except for missing data. All the accessions were phenotyped by determining the contents of 12 isoflavones in the soybean seeds in two consecutive years (2020 and 2021). Then, quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) related to isoflavone contents were identified and validated using multi-locus GWAS models. A total of 112 and 46 QTNs related to isoflavone contents were detected by multiple MLM-based models in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Of these, 12 and 5 QTNs were related to more than two types of isoflavones in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Forty-four QTNs were detected within the 441-Kb physical interval surrounding Gm05:38940662. Of them, four QTNs (Gm05:38936166, Gm05:38936167, Gm05:38940662, and Gm05:38940717) were located at Glyma.05g206900 and Glyma.05g207000, which encode glutathione S-transferase THETA 1 (GmGSTT1), as determined from previous quantitative trait loci annotations and the literature. We detected substantial differences in the transcript levels of GmGSTT1 and two other core genes (IFS1 and IFS2) in the isoflavone biosynthetic pathway between the original cultivar and its mutant. The results of this study provide new information about the factors affecting isoflavone contents in soybean seeds and will be useful for breeding soybean lines with high and stable concentrations of isoflavones.

RESUMO

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.), a globally important grain legume providing a stable source of dietary protein, was one of the earliest plant cytogenetic models. However, the lack of draft genome annotations and unclear structural information on mRNA transcripts have impeded its genetic improvement. To address this, we sequenced faba bean leaf transcriptome using the PacBio single-molecule long-read isoform sequencing platform. We identified 28,569 nonredundant unigenes, ranging from 108 to 9669 bp, with a total length of 94.5 Mb. Many unigenes (3597, 12.5%) had 2-20 isoforms, indicating a highly complex transcriptome. Approximately 96.5% of the unigenes matched sequences in public databases. The predicted proteins and transcription factors included NB-ARC, Myb_domain, C3H, bHLH, and heat shock proteins, implying that this genome has an abundance of stress resistance genes. To validate our results, we selected WCOR413-15785, DHN2-12403, DHN2-14197, DHN2-14797, COR15-14478, and HVA22-15 unigenes from the ICE-CBF-COR pathway to analyze their expression patterns in cold-treated samples via qRT-PCR. The expression of dehydrin-related genes was induced by cold stress. The assembled data provide the first insights into the deep sequencing of full-length RNA from faba bean at the single-molecule level. This study provides an important foundation to improve gene modeling and protein prediction.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy is a technically complex technique, that is being used to treat periampullary malignancy. We provide our experience with laparoscopic-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy (LAPD) with statistics on the outcomes of periampullary cancer patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Thirty patients underwent surgery between June 1, 2016 and May 30, 2020, with 21 undergoing classical PD and 9 undergoing pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD). Prospectively gathered data on surgical outcomes and long-term oncological results are given. RESULTS: The median operative time was 277.5 min (range, 258.7-330 min), and the median intraoperative estimated blood loss was 319.5 mL (range, 241.2-425 mL). The rate of conversion to OPD, surgical reintervention, and mortality was 20%, 13.3%, and 10% respectively. Cumulative surgery-related morbidity was 33.4%, including bleeding (n = 4), severe POPF (n = 4), biliary fistula (n = 1), DGE (n = 2), and intestinal obstruction (n = 1). Pathologic diagnoses were AoV cancer (n = 23), distal CBD cancer (n = 4), PDAC (n = 2), and AoV NET (n = 1). The mean survival time of the LAPD group was 29.9 months. The long-term survival time of the N0 group was 36.8 months, which was significantly longer than that of the N1 group. The long-term survival times of stages I-B, II-A, and II-B were 36.9, 26.5, and 15.7 months, respectively (p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: LAPD has a high rate of conversion to OPD, morbidity, and mortality. However, LPD is feasible technique for highly selected patients. Lymph node metastasis and stage of disease are the risk factors for long-term survival.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Perilla frutescens (Lamiaceae) is distributed in East Asia and is classified into var. frutescens and crispa. P. frutescens is multipurpose crop for human health because of a variety of secondary metabolites such as phenolic compound and essential oil. However, a lack of genetic information has hindered the development and utilization of Perilla genotypes. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was performed to develop expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers from P. frutescens var. crispa (wild type) and Antisperill (a mutant cultivar) and used them to assess the genetic diversity of, and relationships among, 94 P. frutescens genotypes. We obtained 65 Gb of sequence data comprising 632,970 transcripts by de novo RNA-sequencing. Of the 14,780 common SSRs, 102 polymorphic EST-SSRs were selected using in silico polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Overall, successful amplification from 58 EST-SSRs markers revealed remarkable genetic diversity and relationships among 94 P. frutescens genotypes. In total, 268 alleles were identified, with an average of 4.62 alleles per locus (range 2-11 alleles/locus). The average polymorphism information content (PIC) value was 0.50 (range 0.04-0.86). In phylogenetic and population structure analyses, the genotypes formed two major groups: Group I (var. crispa) and Group II (var. frutescens). CONCLUSION: This results suggest that 58 novel EST-SSR markers derived from wild-type cultivar (var. crispa) and its mutant cultivar (Antisperill) have potential uses for population genetics and recombinant inbred line mapping analyses, which will provide comprehensive insights into the genetic diversity and relationship of P. frutescens.

RESUMO

Soybean seeds are consumed worldwide owing to their nutritional value and health benefits. In this study we investigated the metabolic properties of 208 soybean mutant diversity pool (MDP) lines by measuring the isoflavone and fatty acid contents of the seed. The total isoflavone content (TIC) ranged from 0.88 mg/g to 7.12 mg/g and averaged 3.08 mg/g. The proportion of oleic acid among total fatty acids (TFA) ranged from 0.38% to 24.66% and averaged 11.02%. Based on the TIC and TFA among the 208 MDP lines, we selected six lines with altered isoflavone content and six lines with altered oleic acid content compared with those of the corresponding wild-types for measuring gene expression. Each of twelve genes from the isoflavone and fatty acid biosynthesis pathways were analyzed at three different seed developmental stages. Isoflavone biosynthetic genes, including CHI1A, IFS1, and IFS2, showed differences in stages and expression patterns among individuals and wild-types, whereas MaT7 showed consistently higher expression levels in three mutants with increased isoflavone content at stage 1. Expression patterns of the 12 fatty acid biosynthetic genes were classifiable into two groups that reflected the developmental stages of the seeds. The results will be useful for functional analysis of the regulatory genes involved in the isoflavone and fatty acid biosynthetic pathways in soybean.

RESUMO

Transposable elements (TEs)-major components of eukaryotic genomes-have the ability to change location within a genome. Because of their mobility, TEs are important for genome diversification and evolution. Here, a simple rapid method, using the consensus terminal inverted repeat sequences of PONG, miniature inverted-repeat transposable element (MITE)-Tourist (M-t) and MITE-Stowaway (M-s) as target region amplification polymorphism (TE-TRAP) markers, was employed to investigate the mobility of TEs in a gamma-irradiated soybean mutant pool. Among the different TE-TRAP primer combinations, the average polymorphism level and polymorphism information content value were 57.98% and 0.14, respectively. Only the PONG sequence separated the mutant population into three major groups. The inter-mutant population variance, determined using the PONG marker (3.151 and 29%) was greater than that of the M-t (2.209 and 20%) and M-s (2.766 and 18%) markers, whereas the reverse was true for the intra-mutant population variations, with M-t and M-s values, being 15.151 (82%) and 8.895 (80%), respectively, compared with the PONG marker (7.646 and 71%). Thus, the MITE markers revealed more dynamic and active mobility levels than the PONG marker in gamma-ray irradiated soybean mutant lines. The TE-TRAP technique associated with sensitive MITEs is useful for investigating genetic diversity and TE mobilization, providing tools for mutant selection in soybean mutation breeding.

RESUMO

Kenaf is a source of fiber and a bioenergy crop that is considered to be a third world crop. Recently, a new kenaf cultivar, "Jangdae," was developed by gamma irradiation. It exhibited distinguishable characteristics such as higher biomass, higher seed yield, and earlier flowering than the wild type. We sequenced and analyzed the transcriptome of apical leaf and stem using Pacific Biosciences single-molecule long-read isoform sequencing platform. De novo assembly yielded 26,822 full-length transcripts with a total length of 59 Mbp. Sequence similarity against protein sequence allowed the functional annotation of 11,370 unigenes. Among them, 10,100 unigenes were assigned gene ontology terms, the majority of which were associated with the metabolic and cellular process. The Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) analysis mapped 8875 of the annotated unigenes to 149 metabolic pathways. We also identified the majority of putative genes involved in cellulose and lignin-biosynthesis. We further evaluated the expression pattern in eight gene families involved in lignin-biosynthesis at different growth stages. In this study, appropriate biotechnological approaches using the information obtained for these putative genes will help to modify the desirable content traits in mutants. The transcriptome data can be used as a reference dataset and provide a resource for molecular genetic studies in kenaf.

RESUMO

Although Vietnam's massive herbicide exposure in 1960s and 1970s was clearly injurious to health, not all causal relationships have been clarified. We therefore explored associations among dioxins, steroid hormones, age and prostate cancer risk in men. We compared serum levels of dioxin, steroid hormones and prostate specific antigen (PSA) in men aged 56-81years from herbicide-exposed hotspots (n=50) with those from non-sprayed regions (n=48). Mean serum levels of dioxin congeners in the hotspot group were 1.5-11.3 times higher than the non-sprayed group depending on specific compound. Levels of testosterone, estradiol and 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3ß-HSD) activity in the hotspot group were also significantly higher than in non-sprayed group. Estradiol levels were significantly related to levels of several specific dioxin derivatives in both group. Significant positive correlations were also found between DHT and 1234678-HpCDD or 1234678-HpCDF; and between 3ß-HSD activity and 123678-HxCDD, 123478-HxCDF, 123678-HxCDF, or HxCB#169. After adjusting for age, body mass index, and tobacco use, multiple linear regressions showed levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol, testosterone and 3ß-HSD activity were not associated with dioxins in the two groups; however, levels of DHT, testosterone and 3ß-HSD activity increased significantly with age in the hotspot group. The hotspot and non-sprayed groups did not significantly differ in PSA levels. But six of the hotspot subjects had PSA levels >3ng/mL, 3 of whom were suspected to have prostate cancer (PC) after digital rectal examination. Our findings suggest that dioxin exposure can lead to increased levels of several sex steroid hormones with age. The correlation of dioxin with steroid hormone levels and prostate cancer risk should be studied further.

RESUMO

We aimed to determine the relationship between dioxin congeners in maternal breast milk and maternal glucocorticoid levels with newborn birth weight after nearly 45 years of use of herbicides in the Vietnam War. The study subjects comprised 58 mother-infant pairs in a region with high dioxin levels in the soil (hotspot) and 62 pairs from a control region. Dioxin levels in maternal breast milk were measured by HRGC-HRMS. Salivary glucocorticoid levels were determined by LC-MS/MS. Dioxin congener levels in mothers from the hotspot were found to be two to fivefold higher than those in mothers from the control region. Birth weight was inversely correlated with 2,3,7,8-TeCDD and 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF congener levels. The rate of newborns whose birth weight was less than 2500 g was threefold higher in the hotspot (12 %) than in the control region (4 %). Salivary glucocorticoid levels in mothers with low birth weight infants were significantly higher than those in the normal birth weight group. Low birth weight of Vietnamese newborns in a hotspot for dioxin levels is related to some dioxin congener levels and high glucocorticoid levels in mothers. This finding in mother-infant pairs suggests that excess maternal glucocorticoid levels are related to dioxin burden and they result in low birth weight.

RESUMO

Most studies on the relationship between Agent Orange and prostate cancer have focused on US veterans of the Vietnam War. There have been few studies focusing on the relationship between levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and dioxins or steroid hormones in Vietnamese men. In 2009-2011, we collected blood samples from 97 men who had resided in a "dioxin hotspot" and 85 men from a non-sprayed region in Vietnam. Then levels of PSA, dioxins, and steroid hormones were analyzed. Levels of most dioxins, furans, and non-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls were higher in the hotspot than those in the non-sprayed region. Levels of testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, and estradiol differed significantly between the hotspot and the non-sprayed region, but there were no correlations between levels of PSA and steroid hormones and dioxins in either of the two regions. Our findings suggest that PSA levels in Vietnamese men are not associated with levels of dioxin or steroid hormones in these two regions.

RESUMO

This study aims to evaluate the endocrine-disrupting effect of dioxin congeners on adrenal steroid hormones in mother-child pairs. In our previous study, we found that cortisol and cortisone levels were higher in the blood and the saliva of mothers living in a dioxin hotspot area than in mothers from a non-exposed region in Vietnam. In this follow-up study, we determined the salivary steroid hormone levels in 49 and 55 three-year-old children of these mothers in the hotspot and non-exposed region, respectively. Steroid hormones were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and dioxin in the maternal breast milk was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Dioxin levels in the breast milk of mothers from the hotspot (median total toxic equivalents polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans; (TEQ PCDD/Fs) of 11pg/g lipid) were three to four times higher than those of mothers in the non-exposed region (median TEQ PCDD/Fs of 3.07pg/g lipid). Salivary dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels in children were found to be significantly lower in the hotspot than in the non-exposed region, while cortisol and cortisone levels were not different between the two regions. Highly chlorinated dioxin congeners, such as octacholorodibenzodioxin (OCDD), 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptacholorodibenzodioxin (HpCDD) and 1,2,3,4 (or 6), 7,8-hexachlorodibenzodioxin Hx(CDD), showed stronger inverse associations with the children's salivary DHEA than other lowly chlorinated dioxin congeners. Glucocorticoid levels in the mothers exhibited a significantly positive correlation with OCDD and HpCDD/F (polychlorinated dibenzofurans). In conclusion, highly chlorinated dioxin congeners are more strongly correlated with endocrine-disrupting effects on adrenal hormones, resulting in high cortisol levels in the mothers and low DHEA levels in their three-year-old children.

RESUMO

We determined polychlorinated dibenzodioxin (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) levels in breast milk of 143 primiparae living around the three most dioxin-contaminated areas of Vietnam. The women sampled lived in the vicinity of former U.S. air bases at Bien Hoa (n=51), Phu Cat (n=23), and Da Nang (n=69), which are known as dioxin hotspots. Breast milk samples from Bien Hoa City, where residents live very close to the air base, showed high levels of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), with 18% of the samples containing >5 pgTCDD/g lipid. However, Phu Cat residents lived far from the air base and their samples showed lower TCDD levels, with none containing >5 pgTCDD/g lipid. In Da Nang, TCDD levels in mothers from Thanh Khe (close to the air base, n=43) were significantly higher than those in mothers from Son Tra (far from the air base, n=26), but not other PCDD and PCDF (PCDD/F) congeners. Although TCDD levels in Bien Hoa were the highest among these hotspots, levels of other PCDD/F congeners as well as the geometric mean concentration of total PCDD/F level in Bien Hoa (9.3 pg toxic equivalents [TEQ]/g lipid) were significantly lower than the level observed in Phu Cat (14.1 pgTEQ/g lipid), Thanh Khe (14.3 pgTEQ/g lipid), and Son Tra (13.9 pgTEQ/g lipid). Our findings indicated that residents living close to former U.S. air bases were exposed to elevated levels of TCDD, but not of other PCDD/F congeners.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between dioxin concentrations in breast milk and the sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequency in women from herbicide-sprayed and non sprayed areas. Blood samples were taken from 21 women with high TCDD (tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) levels from sprayed areas, 23 women with moderate TCDD levels from sprayed areas, and 19 women from non sprayed areas to determine their SCE frequency. The SCE frequencies for the high and moderate TCDD groups from the sprayed area and for the non sprayed area group were 2.40, 2.19, and 1.48 per cell, respectively. Multiple regression analysis showed that the standardized ß values for 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexaCDD (ß = 0.60), 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptaCDD (ß = 0.64), and octaCDD (ß = 0.65) were higher than those for TCDD (ß = 0.34) and 1,2,3,7,8-pentaCDD (ß = 0.42). The adjusted R² value for polyCDDs (R² = 0.38) was higher than that for polyCDD toxic equivalents (TEQ (toxic equivalents); R² = 0.23). This study therefore shows that levels of hexa-, hepta-, and octaCDD, which were previously regarded as being less toxic than TCDD, are closely related to SCE frequency and that the level of dioxin (pg/g lipid) is potentially more useful as an indicator than TEQ value for explaining SCE frequency.

RESUMO

A recent study found an inverse correlation between serum TCDD levels and serum testosterone in the US veterans, while there is little known on the dioxin and steroid hormones about Vietnamese men. We collected blood samples from 48 men who had resided in a hotspot when exposure happened and 38 men in a non-sprayed area. Some steroid hormones levels showed significant differences between two areas. There were no correlations between steroid hormones and dioxin TEQ, after ajusting for age and other factors. Our findings indicate that steroid hormones of Vietnamese men did not correlate with dioxin TEQ in two areas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and functional results of a surgical treatment of patellar dislocation whose etiology was iatrogenic quadriceps fibrosis in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken from February 2004 to December 2009. The study included 54 pediatric patients (56 knees) that had developed dislocation of the patella after repeated intramuscular injections of antibiotic(s) into the quadriceps muscle. There were 11 males (20.4 %) and 43 females (79.6 %). The patients' mean age at surgery was 7 years, 9 months (range 6 years, 4 months to 12 years, 6 months). A complete history of each patient was recorded. The affected knees were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively on the basis of the symptoms, signs, and roentgenographic findings. Patellar dislocation was classified according Bensahel's criteria. All patients had a three-part surgical procedure that combined capsulorrhaphy, quadricepsplasty, and transfer of the vastus medialis oblique to the superior border of the patella. RESULTS: There has been no poor postsurgical result or recurrence so far; we have noted an ugly scar in nine knees (16.1 %), limitation of the knee flexion in five knees (8.9 %), and loss of extension of 5 °-20 ° in four knees (7.1 %). Overall, we attained excellent results in 39 knees (69.7 %), good results in 13 knees (23.2 %), and fair results in four knees (7.1 %). CONCLUSION: In our cases of pediatric dislocation of the patella caused by iatrogenic quadriceps fibrosis, the introduced three-part surgical procedure has shown great success in restoring the realignment mechanism of the patella. The technique is simple, safe, and effective in skeletally immature children.

RESUMO

Recent studies have found elevated dioxin levels inside some U.S. military former air bases in Vietnam, known as hotspots. Many studies of Agent Orange have been done in U.S. veterans; however, there is little known about Vietnamese men. In 2010, we collected blood samples from 97 men in a hotspot and 85 men in an unsprayed area in Northern Vietnam. Serum concentrations of not only TCDD but also other dioxins (PCDDs), furans (PCDFs), and nonortho polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were significantly higher in the hotspot than in the unsprayed area. In the hotspot, three subareas were demarcated, based on their proximity to the air base. The total toxic equivalents (TEQ) of PCDDs/PCDFs+PCBs was 41.7 pg/g lipid in the area closest to the air base, while it was around 29 pg/g lipid in the other two subareas. In the unsprayed area, the dioxin levels were no different between men who went to the South during the Vietnam War and those who remained in the North, with TEQs PCDDs/PCDFs+PCBs of around 13.6 pg/g lipid. Our findings suggested that people living close to the former U.S. air bases might have been exposed to both Agent Orange and other sources of dioxin-like compounds.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of Agent Orange exposure for prostate cancer with a comparison of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels between a hotspot and a non-sprayed area. METHODS: The study was conducted in Phu Cat district (hotspot) and Kim Bang district (non-sprayed), with a total of 101 men in the hotspot and 97 men in the non-sprayed area older than 50 years of age. About 5 mL of whole blood and a health status questionnaire were collected from each subject in August 2009-2011. RESULTS: The mean age of the subjects in the hotspot (68.0 years old) was significantly higher than that of those in the non-sprayed area (65.0 years old). No significant difference was found between the hotspot area (0.93 ng/mL) and the non-sprayed area (0.95 ng/mL) in terms of PSA levels. Likewise, this was not statistically significant after adjusting for age. The prevalence of high PSA levels (>3 ng/mL) did not differ significantly between the hotspot (14 men; 13.9 %) and non-sprayed area (9 men; 9.3 %). No significant difference was found between the hotspot area and the non-sprayed area in terms of occupation (farmer and others). In control subjects, no significant difference was found between the PSA levels in subjects exposed to Agent Orange and non-exposed subjects. Likewise, no significant difference was found between the PSA levels of combatants and civilians. CONCLUSION: The PSA levels were not significantly different between the hotspot and the non-sprayed area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Nearly 40 years after Agent Orange was last sprayed, we conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate the impact of dioxin exposure on salivary hormones in Vietnamese primiparae. Our previous studies found higher levels of salivary cortisol and cortisone in one of the most highly dioxin-contaminated areas, known as a "hot-spot", than in a non-exposed area. As a result, we suggested that further research with a larger number of participants would be needed to confirm whether dioxin affects steroid hormone levels in Vietnamese primiparae. METHODS: The concentration of steroid hormones in saliva was determined by liquid chromatography (electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry), whereas the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in breast milk were determined by gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry, for a sample of the population from a "hot-spot" (n = 16) and a non-exposed area (n = 10). All subjects were aged between 20 and 30 years and had children aged between 4 and 16 weeks. RESULTS: The mean toxic equivalence of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCDDs + PCDFs in breast milk in the hot-spot area was found to be significantly higher than in the non-exposed area (p < 0.001). Likewise, salivary cortisol, cortisone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels were significantly higher in the hotspot area than in the non-exposed area (p < 0.05). As a result, herein we report, for the first time, that salivary DHEA levels in primiparae are higher in a hot-spot than in a non-exposed area, and that this may be the result of dioxin exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the long-term effects of Agent Orange/dioxin on steroid hormones in Vietnamese primiparae in the post-war period.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of reduction in the treatment of traumatic posterior hip dislocation in children. Data of 22 pediatric patients (22 hips) with traumatic hip dislocation from January 1995 to December 2007 were analyzed. The clinical evaluation focused on symptoms, physical findings, and range of motion. Radiographs identified the type of hip dislocation. The hip dislocation classification was based on Thompson and Epstein. The reduction procedure was performed according to three variants: variant 1, closed reduction; variant 2, release of the adductor longus, lengthening of the psoas tendon, and insertion of a Kirschner wire through the femoral head into the acetabulum; and variant 3, removal of the soft-tissue interposition of the hip. After reduction, radiography was used to determine whether the hip is concentric and to check whether any other injuries might have been caused after manipulation. There were six females (27.3%) and 16 males (72.7%) in this study. All had type I posterior dislocation of the hip. The ages of the patients at diagnosis ranged from 3 years, 2 months to 9 years, 10 months. The reduction procedure was performed according to variant 1 in 16, variant 2 in five, and variant 3 in one. We attained excellent results in eight hips (36.4%), good results in seven hips (31.8%), fair results in four hips (18.2%), and poor results in three hips (13.6%). There was avascular necrosis in three hips (13.6%), coxa magna in two hips (9.1%), deficient limb of 2 cm in two hips (9.1%), and a limp in two hips (9.1%). The hip scores were 82.4 points on average (range 62-100). Children with traumatic hip dislocation should undergo reduction as soon as possible. If the interval from injury to reduction exceeds 3 weeks, we suggest that the surgeon release the adductor longus, lengthen the psoas tendon, and insert a Kirschner wire. This simple and safe surgical procedure results in marked improvement in hip function and prevents complications later.
